Marshall Goldsmith in “What got you here, won’t get you there” talks about leadership, primarily about senior level people in organisations (senior managers, to directors to VP’s or CEO’s).

My take on what Goldsmith talks about, is that in order to be a great leader you do not have to be a great technical expert. The fact that you are at senior levels in an organisation already, will be due partly to your technical accomplishments as well as your leadership capabilities.

At the beginning of any career path, technical expertise is important, although technical expertise alone will not get you to, nor keep you at the top of your game.

One of the biggest contributing factors is the team that you have around you and how you develop and motivate your team. (If you are a sole trader or SME, then one of the things that will help, will be recognising your core strengths and ensuring that you play to these… more on this at a later date).

I appreciate that most people would probably answer the latter – and you’d be right.

Most of us want to work for someone that will keep us engaged in the role, who can engage with us as individuals and who can encourage and motivate the whole team to deliver the results. Are you someone who does this effectively?
